Gorean (Gor) BeveragesAlcoholic Beverages
Fermented milk curds - Fermented milk curds are common in the Plains. Like some of the other drinks listed, this beverage is not exported and does not hold up well to transport, so it is not served in Sanctuary Vidrew. Falarian wine - This wine is uncommon and unlikely to be found within most villages. From time to time, a limited quantity of this is available in Sanctuary Vidrew. This wine is reserved for very special occasions, or very special guests. "Among these petitioners
came one fellow bringing with him the promise of a gift of wine, a wine
supposedly secret, the rare Falarian, a wine only rumored among collectors
to exist, a wine supposedly so rare and precious that its cost might
purchase a city." Kalana - A very potent dry red wine, made from the fruit of the Ka-la-na tree. This drink is usually served in a goblet and is served room temperature. Kalda - An alcoholic beverage made of ka-la-na wine diluted with citrus juices and mixed with strong spices and sliced fruits, served hot. "Kal-da is a hot drink, almost
scalding, made of diluted ka-la-na wine, mixed with citrus juices and
stinging spices. I did not care much for the mouth warming concoction, but
it was popular with some of the lower castes, particularly those who
performed strenuous manual labor. I expected its popularity was due more to
its capacity to warm a man and stick to his ribs, and to its cheapness (a
poor grade of Ka-la-na was used in its brewing) then to any gustatory
excellence." Liqueurs - There are a
wide variety of liqueurs, usually made from spices and fruits, but
occasionally made from blackwyne, nut extracts or even chocolate extracted
into alcohol. These liqueurs are served in tiny, stemmed glasses, and the
bottles and glassware for them is as decorative as the liqueurs are sweet
and heavy. "It is time for the liqueurs,
slave,' I told her 'Yes, Master,' she whispered. 'Ah,'said Glyco.'The
liqueurs!' First from the kitchen, bearing her tray, came the voluptuous
slave of Aemilianuus. Behind her, too with her tray, came the little
dark-haired slave. In a moment both were derferntially serving. The collared
softness of the dark-haired girl well set off the the metal of the tray, and
the small multicolored glasses and bottles upon it." Mead - A fermented beverage made of honey, served in Torvaldsland. This rich amber beverage is lightly fermented and may be spiced during the fermentation process, usually with clove. It is often served in a large horn, though Mistresses may prefer it in a goblet. "In the north generally, mead,
a drink made with fermented honey and water, and often spices and such,
tends to be favored over paga." "Bera went to the next man, to
fill his cup with the mead, from the heavy hot tankard, gripped with cloth,
which she carried."
Paga - grain-based,
distilled hard liquor akin to whiskey; sometimes served warm, this is the
drink most often served in taverns. In Kassau, it is served from pitchers
dipped or tapped from kegs in the kitchens. Botas are for traveling, and are
not used to serve paga in the Sanctuary Vedrew. Paga bowls,
three-footed bowls most commonly used for serving warmed paga, are available
for any Jarl or Master who wishes a large quantity of paga at once, rather
than a smaller amount, refilled often.
Rence beer - Rence beer is not commonly found as far north as Torvoldsland, but when it is, it is a clearish, light beer, much like the American beers of Earth.
Sul Paga - This alcoholic beverage made from suls is like an extremely potent vodka on Earth. It is not exported from the Peasant Villages in which it is distilled.
"Sul paga, as anyone knew, is
seldom available outside of a peasant village, where it is brewed. Sul paga
would slow a thalarion. To stay on your feet after a mouthful of Sul paga it
is said one must be of the peasants, and then for several generations. And
even then, it is said, it is difficult to manage. There is a joke about the
baby of a peasant father being born drunk nine months later."
Ta-wine - Ta-wine is a dry wine made from Ta grapes from the Isle of Cos. It is commonly a red varietal, and is therefore served at room temperature. However, since the only difference between a red wine and a white wine is whether or not the wine is fermented with its musts(skins) on or not, it is possible that there may be white versions of this wine on Gor.
Turian wine - Turian wine seems to be thicker and much sweeter than most other wines produced on Gor. Though small amounts might be kept, it's rare that this drink is ordered in Sanctuary Videw.
"I did not much care for the
sweet, syrupy wines of Turia, flavored and sugared to the point where one
could almost leave one's fingerprint on their surface."
Wine - There are many common types of wine on Gor not specific to certain regions or recipes. Some are dark and some will be light. The temperature at which it can be served will depend on the color of the wine. Often times, potent wine will be mixed with water to reduce its strong effect.
"Wine, incidentally, is often
mixed with water in Gorean homes. This is primarily because of the potency
of many Gorean wines." Non-Alcoholic Beverages
Bazi Tea - Bazi Tea is drunk from three small cups. It is heavily sugared. The nomads of the Tahari prize bazi tea and import it in great quantity, along with Sa-Tarna meal. "...'Is it ready?' I
asked.
Black wine - coffee; traditionally served with heavily sweetened and creamed in tiny cups, very much like espresso...although in most taverns it is served in mugs. Black wine is like Earth coffee...so most expect it to be served in a larger vessel than the scrolls indicate.. more like the daily version of coffee than the espresso counterpart portrayed in the scrolls... It is grown on the slopes of Thentis and while once rare, is becoming more common throughout Gor...If asked to serve it "second slave", the slave serves it black. " 'Second slave,' I told her,
which, among the river towns, and in certain cities, particularly in the
north, is a way of indicating that I would take the black wine without
creams or sugars, and as it came from the pouring vessel, which, of course,
in these areas, is handled by the "second slave," the first slave being the
girl who puts down the cups, takes the orders and sees that the beverage is
prepared according to the preferences of the one who is being served.....The
expression "second slave," incidentally, serves to indicate that one does
not wish creams or sugars with one's black wine, even if only one girl is
serving." Chocolate - Made from beans brought back on one of the early Voyages of Acquisition, this is the same as the chocolate of Earth. It is served in higher class establishments. It is usually served hot in a heavy mug or cold in a goblet. "This is warmed chocolate," I said,
pleased. It was very rich and creamy. "Yes, Mistress," said the girl. "It is
very good," I said. "Thank you, Mistress," she said. "Is it from Earth?" I
asked. "Not directly," she said. "Many things here, of course, ulitmately
have an Earth origin. It is not improbable that the beans from which the
first cacao trees on this world were grown were brought from Earth." "Do the
trees grow near here?" I asked. "No Mistress," she said, "we obtain the
beans from which the chocolate is made, from Cosian merchants, who in turn,
obtain them in the tropics." Juices - Juices may be made from any single fruit/veggie or combination of fruits/veggies. Juices like apricot and carrot can be served alone. Juices like tospit must be sweetened well before serving, as tospit is very bitter. Juices like ramberry come in such small quantities that they are only used in combination with other juices, as an accent. They are very thick and are diluted with larma, apricot, or peach juice before serving. Milk - Can be bosk
milk, verr or kaiila. Bosk and verr are the most common in Torvaldsland,
with a distinct preference among the Torvaldslanders for the sharper taste
of verr milk. Tea - Tea may be served in Sanctuary Vedrew. Black tea has been imported, and some is even being grown on Gor itself, now, in the same regions as coffee and chocolate, whose climate it shares. Herbs may also be steeped into tea.
Water -
Spring water from the mountains or from the liana vine or carpet plants from
the rain forest area inland of Schendi. (The Sanctuary Vedrew gets fresh
water from the stream that runs along the Western Boundary of the Village.)
