The
word Mentor comes from Homer (an ancient storyteller
also author of the classic book "The Odyssey" and "The
Iliad").
Mentor was the man whom Odysseus trusted with his household
while he went off for ten years to fight the Trojan war.
A
"Mentor" is someone you trust.
WHAT A MENTOR IS NOT:
1)
Infallible...we are human
2) a Teacher or Guardian...we can only advise
3) Your Master, we can not tell you not to communicate
or not to do something. Only you can decide.
4) Reference checker, only you should do that, only
you know what you risk. We can show you how, but after
that it is up to you.
5) Responsible for you...only you are responsible for
your safety and decisions, once you have a Master then
they become responsible as well, but you are your first
guardian.
WHAT A MENTOR IS:
1)
A listening ear, and a shoulder
2) Someone who can show you how to
research, and learn safely. They can
point out pitfalls but you will always
find your own.
3) A caring friend.
4) Someone with their own experience
who is willing to share that with
you...not control or direct you by it.
5) Someone who can introduce you to a
strange new world for you to
explore...but who can not explore it
for you.
Most of all a Mentor is there when you make
those first steps with a new Dom, or new steps with an old
one...ready to listen...and watch you take wing.
Many tend to believe that a Mentor must be a
Male Dominant, that is simply not so. A
Mentor can be another Dominant or submissive,
yes, either male or female. The
important thing is it should be someone that
you trust, someone you can confide in.
While the most commonly heard about Mentor is
a Mentor for a submissive, the reality is it
is quite common for a Dominant to also have a
Mentor. Another fallacy is that only a
novice or newcomer to the lifestyle needs or
should consider having a Mentor.
Regardless of your role or experience in the
lifestyle a Mentor may prove to be a valuable
asset to you.
Remember, a Mentor's purpose is not to tell
you what to do, nor should they be making
decisions for you. You are not
accountable to your Mentor for any of your
actions or decisions you make.
